For residential buyers, the uPVC vs aluminium decision is often about look and feel. At development scale, it's a different conversation — one driven by compliance thresholds, supply chain reliability, and cost per unit across dozens or hundreds of openings. Here's the comparison that actually matters for specification.

Thermal Performance & U-Values

Current Building Regulations (Part L) set minimum thermal performance standards for new-build and social housing windows, and public sector tenders frequently specify a maximum U-value as a hard compliance gate rather than a nice-to-have.

  • uPVC: multi-chamber uPVC profiles routinely achieve U-values of 0.8–1.0 W/m²K without additional engineering, making compliance straightforward and consistent across large orders.
  • Aluminium: performance depends entirely on the thermal break quality. A properly specified aluminium system with a polyamide thermal break can match uPVC's U-values, but cheaper aluminium systems will not — this is the detail to verify before including aluminium in a tender response, not after.

For tender responses, it's worth confirming warranty length and what's covered on a per-product basis rather than quoting a general figure — housing associations increasingly ask for this in writing as part of quality scoring.
